The process for obtaining a PESO license involves several important steps to ensure compliance with Indian safety regulations, particularly for products related to petroleum, explosives, and similar industries. Initially, the process begins with the preparation of the necessary application documents, which include detailed information about the producer, the Authorized Indian Representative (AIR), the products or components being certified, and the manufacturing plant. For certain goods, type approval tests may be required to confirm they meet specific safety standards, and in cases involving items like pressure vessels, a factory audit may be conducted to verify that the manufacturing processes adhere to PESO regulations.

Once the application is prepared, the documents undergo a review by PESO authorities. If everything meets the required standards, a PESO certificate is issued. Following this, the final PESO license is granted to the AIR, who must be a resident Indian and is responsible for ensuring the ongoing compliance of the certified products. The AIR must be technically certified and trained for the product and is required to enter into a 5-year contractual commitment. This role can be filled by your Indian subsidiary, sales office, or a third-party service provider, with assistance available if needed. In more complex situations, on-site acceptance and testing in India may be necessary. It’s important that all documents submitted are up-to-date with the latest requirements and are no more than two years old. In some cases, individual approval for specific projects can be pursued, which is more cost-effective and requires less paperwork, though it limits the use of approved items to the specific project in question. Once the PESO license is approved, the product can be imported into India, with authorities typically accepting internationally recognized test reports like IECEs or ATEX. If such reports are not available, the products must be tested in India to ensure compliance.
